Dean of the University of Chicago Law School: 1979-1987

Scholarship

Gerhard Casper is a scholar of constitutional law and history, comparative law, and jurisprudence. From 1977 to 1990, he served as the editor of The Supreme Court Review. At the conclusion of Casper’s deanship, the University of Chicago Law School Record praised his “distinguished accomplishments in political theory and empirical social science,” calling them, “part of the long multidisciplinary tradition of the Law School.” ["The Casper Deanship,” 7]

In addition to numerous scholarly articles, his notable publications include: Juristischer Realismus und politische Theorie im amerikanischen Rechtsdenken [Realism and Political Theory in American Legal Thought], 1967; Landmark Briefs and Arguments of the Supreme Court of the United States, 1975 (co-editor); The Workload of the Supreme Court, 1976 (co-authored with Richard A. Posner); Der Laienrichter im Strafprozeß: Empirische Studien zur Rechtsvergleichung [Lay Judges in the Criminal Courts: Empirical Studies in Comparative Law], 1979 (co-authored with Hans Zeisel); and Separating Power: Essays on the Founding Period, 1997.
