Biography
Thomas J. Miles earned his bachelor’s degree summa cum laude in political science and economics from Tufts University in 1990. He earned his doctorate in economics from the University of Chicago in 2000. His dissertation was titled "Three Empirical Essays in the Economics of Crime." In 2003, Miles graduated from Harvard Law School, after which he clerked for Judge Jay S. Bybee of the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
Miles returned to the University of Chicago in 2004, serving as the Olin Fellow in Law and Economics at the Law School for one year. He then joined the faculty as an assistant professor of law and was promoted to full professorship in 2010. In 2013, Miles was named the Clifton R. Musser Professor of Law and Economics. While on the Law School’s faculty, Miles has chaired both the appointments committee and the accreditation review committee.
Miles was appointed dean of the Law School in 2015 and began his second term as dean in 2020.
